1. The Power of Two Layers
The most effective soundproofing system involves using two layers of material on your wall or ceiling:
Mass Loaded Vinyl: It’s a flexible, high-density barrier that acts like a “sound-blocking superhero.” Think of it as adding “extra walls” to your room without the hassle of major renovations. It works for walls, ceilings, doors, and floors. Despite being just 2mm thick, it packs a massive punch with an acoustic rating of Rw-26. To put it simply: every 10 points of Rw means the sound you hear is roughly cut in half. That is serious peace and quiet in a roll. You can easily bend it, cut it, and tack it directly to your wall studs or ceiling joists before you put up your plasterboard.
Acoustic Plasterboard: Once your MLV is in place, you need a good surface layer. Standard plasterboard is often too light to stop city noise. Acoustic plasterboard is much heavier and denser. When combined with MLV, it creates a formidable shield against the noise from West End traffic or your New Farm neighbours.
2. Filling the Gaps (Absorption)

Windows: If you can’t afford a full double-glazed window replacement, you can install secondary glazing (adding a second, separate window pane inside the existing frame) or use heavy, thick acoustic curtains.
