Standard Plasterboard vs Water-Resistant Plasterboard

Building or renovating a home is a big investment. Whether you are fixing up a bathroom or building a new house from scratch, the materials you choose matter. One of the most common questions we get asked is about the walls. specifically, the difference between standard plasterboard and water-resistant plasterboard.

In Australia, we often call plasterboard “Gyprock.” While they might look similar, choosing the wrong one can lead to big problems later, like rot, mould, and crumbling walls. You don’t want to have to rip out your new bathroom in two years because the walls have failed.

Here is a simple breakdown of the differences between these two boards and where you should use them.

What is the main difference between standard and water-resistant plasterboard?

The main difference is in the core: standard plasterboard is made of plain gypsum and absorbs water like a sponge, while water-resistant plasterboard has a wax or silicone mix inside that stops moisture from soaking in.

Think of standard plasterboard as a dry biscuit. If you dip a biscuit in tea, it gets soggy and falls apart. Standard plasterboard does the exact same thing when it gets wet. It is made of a gypsum core wrapped in paper. It is strong when dry, but weak when wet.

Water-resistant plasterboard is different. During manufacturing, a special wax or silicone is added to the gypsum core. This acts like a raincoat. It stops water from soaking into the board quickly. This keeps the board hard and strong, even when the air is humid or damp.

Where should I use standard plasterboard?

Standard plasterboard is perfect for dry living areas like bedrooms, lounge rooms, hallways, and dining rooms where there is no water plumbing or high humidity.

For most of your house, standard plasterboard is the best choice. It is the industry standard for a reason.

  • It costs less to buy than specialty boards.

  • It gives a nice, smooth finish that looks great with a coat of paint.

  • It is light and easy for builders to cut and install.

However, “standard” does not mean “all-purpose.” You should strictly keep this board away from water. If you use standard board in a bathroom, the steam from your shower will eventually turn the paper yellow, cause mould to grow, and make the plaster crumble.

Is water-resistant plasterboard actually waterproof?

No, water-resistant plasterboard is not fully waterproof. It reduces water absorption but still needs a waterproof membrane paint (tanking) to be fully sealed in showers.

This is the biggest myth in renovation. Many people think that because they bought “water-resistant” board, they don’t need to do anything else. This is incorrect.

“Water-resistant” just means it won’t rot immediately if it gets damp. However, if you spray water on it every day (like in a shower), it will eventually fail. To make it fully waterproof, your builder or tiler must paint a rubber-like coating (called a membrane) over the plasterboard before they put the tiles on.

Think of the plasterboard as the strong backbone, and the waterproof membrane as the shield. You need both to stop leaks.

How can I tell the difference just by looking?

You can tell them apart by colour: Standard plasterboard is usually white or ivory, while water-resistant plasterboard is typically blue, blue-grey, or sometimes green.

Manufacturers make it easy to spot the difference so you don’t make a mistake.

  • White/Ivory face: This is the standard board. Keep it in the bedrooms and hallways.

  • Blue/Grey face: This is water-resistant board (often called “Wet Area” board or “Villaboard” depending on the brand and type). This belongs in the bathroom.

If you walk into your bathroom renovation and see white boards on the wall, stop the work! It usually means the wrong board has been installed. Checking the colour is a quick and easy way for homeowners to make sure their builder is doing the right thing.

Can I put tiles directly onto standard plasterboard?

No, you should not tile over standard plasterboard in wet areas because it cannot handle the weight of the tiles and the moisture will cause the tiles to peel off.

Tiles are heavy. When you stick tiles to a wall, you are relying on the paper face of the plasterboard to hold that weight.

Standard plasterboard paper is not designed to hold heavy tiles in a damp room. Moisture can get through the grout lines between your tiles. If that moisture hits standard paper, the paper separates from the gypsum core. Since the tile is glued to the paper, the tile will fall off the wall, taking the paper with it.

Water-resistant plasterboard has a treated, stronger paper liner that bonds much better with tile glue. It is designed to hold the weight of the tiles securely for decades.

Why  choosing the right board matters

Choosing the right board saves you money on future repairs, protects your family’s health from mould, and ensures your home insurance remains valid.

Here is why this matters to different people:

  • For Homeowners: It protects your wallet. Fixing a water-damaged bathroom involves ripping up tiles, replacing walls, and replumbing. It costs thousands. Doing it right the first time costs only a little bit more in materials.

  • For Health: Standard board in wet areas creates black mould. This mould grows behind the wall where you can’t see it, but it releases spores that can make you sick. Water-resistant board helps stop this.

  • For Builders: It is about reputation. If you use the right materials, your work lasts, and your customers remain happy. It is also the law that you must comply with Australian Standards to get the job certified.
