Fire Rated Plasterboard is beefed up with glass fibers and other additives in its core to hold together much longer than regular drywall when exposed to a flame. It’s designed to slow down the spread of fire, giving people more time to get out and keeping the building’s structure stable for longer. You’ll usually recognize it by its pink or red paper face, and while it’s a bit tougher to cut because of those internal fibers, it installs just like your everyday board. It’s the simplest way to meet building regs and give your clients some serious peace of mind.

FAQs
Q: What makes plasterboard fire-rated?
A: Fire-rated board is packed with fiberglass strands and a special mineral called vermiculite. When a fire hits, the vermiculite expands to seal up gaps, and the fiberglass holds the whole sheet together so the wall doesn’t collapse under intense heat.
Q: What is the difference between fire rated plasterboard and regular plasterboard?
A: Standard plasterboard is fine for basic walls, but it degrades pretty quickly in a fire. Fire-rated board is much heavier and denser, packed with fire-retardant additives, and legally certified to hold back direct flames for 60 to 120 minutes depending on the system.
Q: What is the best fire-resistant plasterboard?
A: You can’t go past Siniat Fireshield. They are the absolute trade standards across Australia, completely certified to meet our local building codes, and what most local builders reach for when doing boundary walls or multi-res jobs.
Q: Can I paint fireproof plasterboard?
A: Yep, absolutely. Once it’s up, taped, and flushed, you prime and paint it exactly like standard plasterboard. All the fire-blocking magic happens inside the core, so using standard interior paint won’t mess with its performance at all.
