A Buyer’s Guide to Water-Resistant Plasterboard

When you are renovating a home, it is easy to focus on the aesthetics like tiles, tapware, and paint colours. However, the most important part of your project is actually what is hidden behind the walls. Using the wrong materials in a bathroom or kitchen can lead to expensive repairs, mould growth, and structural damage.

Water-resistant (WR) versions are made with a special core. This core has wax or silicone mixed into the gypsum (the “plaster” part) to stop water from soaking in. In Australia, you can usually spot these boards because they have a green paper face instead of the usual grey or white.

How is water-resistant plasterboard different from normal plasterboard?

The main difference is that water-resistant plasterboard is built to repel moisture, whereas standard plasterboard acts like a sponge and will crumble if it gets wet. Standard plasterboard is perfect for bedrooms and living rooms because it is lightweight and easy to install. However, if standard board gets damp, the paper peels off, the inside turns to mush, and it becomes a breeding ground for mould.

Water-resistant board, on the other hand, undergoes a “hydrophobic” treatment. This means the materials inside “dislike” water and push it away. This treatment keeps the board strong and rigid even in steamy environments. Even though it is tougher, it is just as easy to cut and install as the regular stuff, making it the perfect upgrade for any room with a tap.

Where should you use water-resistant plasterboard?

You should use water-resistant plasterboard in any room where there is running water or high humidity, specifically in bathrooms, ensuites, laundries, and kitchens. While it might be tempting to use regular board to save a few dollars, Australian building standards actually require moisture-resistant materials in “wet areas” to protect the frame of your house.

Here is a quick checklist of where to use it:

  • The Bathroom: This is a non-negotiable area. Use it on every wall and the ceiling.

  • The Laundry: Steam from dryers and splashes from the sink make this a high-moisture zone.

  • The Kitchen: Use it behind your sink and as a backing for your splashback.

  • The Garage or Alfresco: If you have an outdoor kitchen or a laundry area in the garage, WR board will handle the outdoor humidity much better than standard board.

Why does this material matter to different people?

Water-resistant plasterboard benefits everyone involved in a building project by providing peace of mind, meeting legal building codes, and protecting the long-term value of the property. Whether you are doing the work yourself or hiring a professional, using the right board makes the job easier and safer.

For Homeowners and Families

If you are living in the house, your biggest concern is health. Standard plasterboard that gets wet can grow “black mould” inside the walls where you can’t see it. This can cause allergies and breathing problems. Water-resistant board stays dry and clean, keeping your family safe.

For DIY Renovators

If you are doing a “weekend warrior” project, WR board is your best friend because it is forgiving. If you make a small mistake with your tiling or waterproofing, the water-resistant core provides a safety net that prevents the whole wall from rotting instantly. It’s a small extra investment that saves you from a massive headache later.

For Professional Builders

For pros, it’s all about compliance and quality. Using the correct Australian-standard materials means you won’t be called back for repairs. It also provides a much stronger surface for heavy tiles, meaning your hard work stays looking perfect for years.

What should you look for when buying?

When you are ready to buy, look for the board thickness (usually 10mm), the “green” colour coding, and a “recessed edge” which makes joining the sheets much easier. It is important to buy from a supplier that stocks trusted Australian brands, as these are tested specifically for our harsh climate and high humidity.

  • Size: Most residential walls use 10mm thick boards. If you want better soundproofing, you might opt for 13mm.

  • Edges: Look for “Recessed Edge” (RE). This means the long edges of the board are slightly tapered, allowing you to fill the gap with tape and plaster for a perfectly flat wall.

  • Standards: Ensure the board meets AS/NZS 2588. This is the Australian proof that the board is actually water-resistant and not just a regular board painted green!

Accessory Checklist

To ensure your water-resistant plasterboard performs as intended, you must use the correct accessories, specifically moisture-resistant jointing compounds and waterproof tapes. A wall is only as strong as its weakest point, and the joints between the sheets are where moisture is most likely to enter.

  • Moisture-Resistant Compound: Standard plastering mud can soften if it gets damp. Use a specialised compound designed for wet areas to ensure the joints stay hard and secure.

  • Waterproof Tapes: While paper tape is standard for bedrooms, many modern wet-area systems recommend reinforced mesh or waterproof tapes to prevent cracking and moisture seepage at the seams.

  • The Right Screws: Always use galvanised or treated screws to prevent rust marks from bleeding through your paint or grout over time.

Can you put tiles over water-resistant plasterboard?

Yes, you can definitely tile over water-resistant plasterboard, and it is actually the preferred surface for most modern bathroom renovations. The board is very flat and stable, which makes it much easier to stick tiles to than a bumpy brick or concrete wall.

However, there is one very important rule: Water-resistant is not the same as “waterproof.” Even though the board resists moisture, you still need to apply a liquid waterproofing membrane (that stretchy, paint-on blue or grey stuff) over the joins and in the shower area before you start tiling. The board is your “back-up” layer; the membrane and the tiles are your “front-line” layer. Together, they make your bathroom completely watertight.
