Picking the wrong product can mean fading, warping, corrosion, or moisture problems within a few years. Here’s how to choose cladding that actually holds up.
1. Start With UV Resistance

Brisbane gets some of the highest UV exposure of any Australian capital, and it’s relentless for most of the year. Cladding that isn’t rated for it will fade, chalk, or become brittle well before its expected lifespan.

- Powder-coated metal cladding is a strong option too, provided it carries a coating rated for high-UV Australian conditions (look for AS/NZS coating standards on the spec sheet).
- Timber and timber-look products need a genuinely UV-stable finish, or a maintenance schedule you’re prepared to keep up — untreated or poorly coated timber cladding is one of the most common repaint/repair jobs in Brisbane renovations.
2. Plan for Heavy, Sudden Rain

- Whatever product you choose, correct flashing and jointing at every panel edge matters as much as the cladding itself, even a premium product will fail early if water gets behind it.
3. Factor in Coastal Air, Even If You’re Not Right on the Water
Salt-laden air travels further inland than most people expect, and Brisbane’s bayside and riverside suburbs (and areas that catch onshore winds) see real corrosion risk on metal fixings and cladding.
- If you’re within a few kilometres of the coast or a tidal section of the river, choose cladding and fixings with a higher corrosion-resistance rating, like marine-grade fixings and coatings designed for coastal exposure zones, not standard inland-grade hardware.
- Fibre cement cladding has an advantage here too, since it doesn’t corrode; only its metal fixings and flashings need the coastal-grade treatment.
- If you do go with metal cladding near the coast, confirm the product’s corrosion warranty explicitly covers coastal/marine environments — many standard warranties exclude or shorten cover in these zones.
4. Think About Humidity and Moisture Behind the Cladding
It’s not just what hits the cladding from outside. Brisbane’s humidity means moisture management behind the wall matters just as much.
- Pair your cladding choice with an appropriate sarking or weather barrier behind the frame to manage condensation and vapour movement.
- In humid, low-airflow areas (side returns, shaded walls under eaves), choose cladding and a cavity system that allows some ventilation behind the sheet, reducing the risk of trapped moisture and mould over time.
